Mad Dog Coll: An Irish Gangster .pdf download by Breandán Delap

Download PDF Read online

What was so fascinating about this Prohibition-era gangster? After all, dozens of such hoods roamed the streets of New York City in those desperate and violent years.

But Vincent Coll took street violence to another level. He was a fearless soldier who became a leader. He forced Dutch Schultz, one of the toughest gang leaders of the era, into hiding. Coll and his crew revolutionized the art of the drive-by shooting, which is still used today by modern street gangs. His kidnapping schemes targeted other gangsters, who couldn't go to the cops. He systematically cut down his opposition, even though he was outnumbered by more than ten to one.

Then there was the real brains behind the Coll gang — a woman. Known by the name Lottie Kreisberger, she was the quintessential gun moll and, when teamed with Vincent Coll, set their destiny for either greatness or disaster.

In 1931, the year of the bloodiest gang war in New York City up until that time, Coll emerged as front-page news, with the roughest and toughest gangsters in the five boroughs running for cover from this ruthless and fearless killer and as the New York City Police.

Download PDF Read online

Diwan and Galal looks at the structure and prospects of the Middle East economies after the 2011 Uprisings, focusing on issues of economic growth, inequality, the impact of oil, and the unfolding political transitions.
On the growth question, the book looks into the extent of structural transformation of the economy, the political economy reasons for the lack of structural change, and the external conditions in the EU and in the GCC that underpin the lack of structural change. On inequality, the book offers new measures of equality of opportunity in human development and in the job market, and it also reviews the complex political economy of subsidy removal. Regarding natural resources, the volume provides three innovations: connecting the notion of 'oil curse' to the global phenomena of asset bubbles; evidence that resource curse effects do not rise monotonically with the size of the resource rent, but rather, according to an inverted U shape; and an extension of the concept of rent to the other non-oil rents that are also predominant in the region. Finally, the volume places the political transition in the region in a global.

e-Book Download Outline Studies in Christian Doctrine by George P Pardington pdf

Download PDF Read online

Outline Studies in Christian Doctrine has been a primer for many thousands of Bible school students who, as missionaries, ministers and lay Christians, have carried its teaching to every part of our world. George P. Pardington, son of a Methodist minister, had the advantage of a classical education (Drew University), earning his doctorate in 1898 from New York University. Early drawn to A.B. Simpson and his "Friday meetings" in New York City, Pardington devoted most of his professional life to teaching at Simpson's Missionary Training Institue—now Nyack (New York) College. Severely handicapped as the result of a merciless beating at age 10 by his schoolteacher, Pardington did not let physical suffering suppress his victorious spirit or his keen sense of humor. He regaled his students with his wit and motivated them by the warmth of his unwavering devotion to Jesus Christ and the Scriptures. Published posthumously following the author's untimely death in 1915 at age 49, has been in continuous print for nearly three-quarters of a century. The chapters of this book, prepared personally by the author just prior to his death, distill the essense of his classroom teaching.

An education leader relates how his experiences with the civil rights movement led him to develop programs promoting educational success in science and technology for African Americans and others.

When Freeman Hrabowski was twelve years old, a civil rights leader visited his Birmingham, Alabama, church and spoke about a children s march for civil rights and opportunity. That leader was the Reverend Martin Luther King Jr., and that march changed Hrabowski s life.

Until then, Freeman was a kid who loved school and solving math problems. Although his family had always stressed the importance of education, he never expected that the world might change and that black and white students would one day study together.

But hearing King speak changed everything for Hrabowski, who convinced his parents that he needed to answer King s call to stand up for equality. While participating in the famed Children s Crusade, he spent five terrifying nights in jail during which Freeman became a leader for the younger kids, as he learned about the risk and sacrifice that it would take to fight for justice.

Hrabowski went on to fuse his passion for education and for equality, as he.

Download PDF Read online

Aeronautical engineers concerned with the analysis of aircraft dynamics and the synthesis of aircraft flight control systems will find an indispensable tool in this analytical treatment of the subject. Approaching these two fields with the conviction that an understanding of either one can illuminate the other, the authors have summarized selected, interconnected techniques that facilitate a high level of insight into the essence of complex systems problems. These techniques are suitable for establishing nominal system designs, for forecasting off-nominal problems, and for diagnosing the root causes of problems that almost inevitably occur in the design process. A complete and self-contained work, the text discusses the early history of aircraft dynamics and control, mathematical models of linear system elements, feedback system analysis, vehicle equations of motion, longitudinal and lateral dynamics, and elementary longitudinal and lateral feedback control. The discussion concludes with such topics as the system design process, inputs and system performance assessment, and multi-loop flight control systems.

Download Appalachian Dance: Creativity and Continuity in Six Communities by Susan Eike Spalding pdf

Download PDF Read online

In Appalachian Dance, Susan Eike Spalding employs twenty-five years' worth of rich interviews with black and white Virginians, Tennesseeans, and Kentuckians to explore the evolution and social uses of dance practices in each region. Spalding analyzes how issues as disparate as industrialization around coal, race relations, and the 1970s folk revival profoundly influenced freestyle clogging and other dance forms. She reveals how African Americans and Native Americans, as well as European immigrants drawn to the timber mills and coal fields, added to local dance vocabularies. By placing each community in its sociopolitical and economic context, Spalding explores how the formal and stylistic nuances found in Appalachian dance reflect the beliefs, shared understandings, and experiences of the community at large.

A dizzying series of momentous military actions occurred in Virginia in 1863. A year that began with Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia possessing the advantage in the field ended with the Southern army in tatters but still strong enough to hold back George G. Meade's Army of the Potomac. Stunning Confederate victories at Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville in the spring were followed by a march into Maryland and Pennsylvania. The decisive Federal victory at Gettysburg in July, however, sent the Confederates reeling back into Virginia. By the year's end Lee's army was encamped behind the Rapidan River with a vast Federal army ready to attack and advance on Richmond. The Storm Tide traces the history of these infamous battles of 1863 and provides a series of easy-to-follow tour guides to the battlefields today. Many of these battles are well known -- Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg -- but some are not -- Bristoe Station and Mine Run.In addition to lively narratives of the battles, noting unusual incidents and briefly highlighting the careers of the leaders who shaped them, the book contains more than 250 period photographs and line drawings, more than 100.

Download Back To Basics: A Study Of The Second Lebanon War And Operation Cast Lead {pdf} by Scott C. Farquhar

Download PDF Read online

This work studies the combat actions in two operations in Lebanon and the Gaza Strip. The writing team focused on the transformation of the IDF before and after the Second Lebanon War of 2006 and in preparation for Operation CAST LEAD in the winter of 2008-09. In Lebanon, the IDF pitted ill-trained soldiers and ill-educated officers, who attempted to carry out vague orders and unfamiliar tasks, against men with good weapons and a simple mission. This was the first open conflict in Israel's "cold war" with Iran and its proxy force of Hezbollah in what became known as the Second Lebanon War. The IDF Operation CAST LEAD against Hamas in 2008-09 was a small-scale affair in comparison to the multi-division attack into Lebanon in 2006. The former operation, however, restored confidence in both the government and armed forces in the eyes of the Israeli populace. The reforms of the year and a half between conflicts paid great dividends. (Originally published by the Combat Studies Institute Press, U.S. Army)

In Assessment and Intervention for Executive Function Difficulties, McCloskey, Perkins, and Diviner provide a unique blend of theory, research, and practice that offers clinicians an overarching framework for the concept of executive functions (EFs) in educational settings. The conceptual model of executive functions is detailed, including their role in behavior, learning, and production across all settings. The heart of the book focus on the practical issues involved in the use of assessment tools, tests, report writing, and the implementation and follow-up of targeted interventions using the EF model.  Six case studies are introduced in Chapter 1 and followed throughout the book, building understanding of the executive function difficulties of each child, assessment for identifying the difficulties, and interventions for dealing with the difficulties.  An additional case study is discussed in detail in one of the concluding chapters, and a companion CD will provide the practitioner with a wealth of assessment forms, parent and teacher handouts, behavior tracking charts, and report/documentation forms.

When twenty-four-year-old Susannah Cahalan woke up alone in a hospital room, strapped to her bed and unable to move or speak, she had no memory of how she’d gotten there. Download Resistance and Redirection: Our First Forty Years: A Memoir pdf - John T. Schwiebert

Download PDF Read online

Since their marriage in 1975, John and Pat Schwiebert have shared a remarkable 40 years, living in community, offering hospice care to persons dying from cancer and AIDS, practicing military tax resistance and other forms of non-violent resistance, ministering in several church congregations in Portland, Oregon—including one they helped start—and creating Grief Watch, a home based publishing enterprise. In this memoir John recalls the events that led the two of them to “seek first the commonwealth of God,” and in so doing to pursue a specific way of life that would put them at odds with the dominant culture, and sometimes in trouble with the law. The sixteen chapters in this book explore such shared life choices as Embracing Community, Sharing All Things in Common, Saying No to Caesar, Living with Interesting People, Doing Church Differently, and more.

Download When the Bubble Bursts: Clinical Perspectives on Midlife Issues pdf - Eda Goldstein

Download PDF Read online

There are common midlife events that account for the special narcissistic vulnerabilities of this period of life, and Eda Goldstein ably reviews these events and the theoretical perspectives commonly brought to bear on them. In When the Bubble Bursts, however, Goldstein's special concern is those individuals who come to midlife with heightened narcissistic vulnerabilities that make the navigation of this stage of life more difficult still. In understanding the latter such patients and devising a treatment approach appropriate to their "self" issues, Goldstein adopts a broadly self-psychological frame of reference. It is a matter, she finds again and again, of understanding how current stressors frustrate healthy self needs and trigger narcissistic vulnerabilities. Self-psychologically informed treatment, which, in Goldstein's pragmatic purview, embraces modalities that are, to varying degrees, supportive, psychodynamic, and psychoanalytic, reworks and strengthens self structures in helping patients find new ways of affirming their sense of self. Her substantive case studies, which accompany the reader through.

Download Fluid-Structure Interactions: Cross-Flow-Induced Instabilities by Michael P. Païdoussis pdf

Download PDF Read online

Structures in contact with fluid flow, whether natural or man-made, are inevitably subject to flow-induced forces and flow-induced vibration: from plant leaves to traffic signs and to more substantial structures, such as bridge decks and heat exchanger tubes. Under certain conditions the vibration may be self-excited, and it is usually referred to as an instability. These instabilities and, more specifically, the conditions under which they arise are of great importance to designers and operators of the systems concerned because of the significant potential to cause damage in the short term. Such flow-induced instabilities are the subject of this book. In particular, the flow-induced instabilities treated in this book are associated with cross-flow, that is, flow normal to the long axis of the structure. The book treats a specific set of problems that are fundamentally and technologically important: galloping, vortex-shedding oscillations under lock-in conditions, and rain-and-wind-induced vibrations, among others. The emphasis throughout is on providing a physical description of the phenomena that is as clear and up-to-date as possible.

The fascinating and generously illustrated catalogue documents the history of Land art from its emergence during the early 1960s through 1974. A companion volume to the first large-scale exhibition on Land art, this book traces the emergence of the artistic impulses to use the earth as material, land as medium, and to locate works in remote sites, beyond familiar art contexts. Ends of the Earth challenges many myths about Land art-that it was primarily a North American phenomenon, that it was foremost a sculptural practice, and that it exceeds the confines of the art system. Essays by leading young scholars will offer new insights into Land art's emergence, including its intrinsic connection to media, its dreams of an elsewhere, the attraction of wastelands, and the problems inherent in a historical evaluation of site-specific or ephemeral art. The book will also include a series of reflections from the major curators, critics, and dealers who helped to make Land art both as work and discourse in the 1960s and 1970s.
